Split PDF

Split a PDF into parts or merge picked pages into one file.

Upload a single PDF, then visually pick pages or insert split points.

What does this tool do?

PDF Split lets you break a single PDF document into several smaller files. It's the fastest way to chop a long report into topic-sized pieces, send only the relevant clauses of a contract, or pull a single page out of a bulk-scanned bundle.

The HexxPDF Split tool runs in your browser — your files are not uploaded to our servers. After you load a PDF, every page appears as a thumbnail. In Pick pages mode, tap thumbnails to select or deselect, and use "Select all", "Clear selection", and "Invert" for bulk selection; fullscreen preview can remove a page from the export. In Split mode, tap the vertical dividers between pages to add or remove cut marks; shortcuts include "Split every page" and "Clear splits". The colored band shows which pages belong to each output PDF. No account, no payment.

It works as well for slicing a long manual into chapters as it does for snapping a single page out of a statement.

How to use it

  1. Pick the PDF you want to split

Drag the source PDF onto the upload area or click "Choose file". As soon as it loads, every page shows up as a thumbnail you can scroll through.

  2. Choose the split method

Pick the Pick pages or Split tab at the top. In Pick pages mode, tap thumbnails to choose which pages to keep. In Split mode, tap the vertical dividers between thumbnails to add or remove cut marks; the colored band shows which pages land in each output PDF.

  3. Adjust pages or cut marks

In Pick pages mode, only checked pages are merged in document order into one new PDF. In Split mode, each cut mark splits the document into consecutive segments; each segment downloads as its own PDF. Example: on a 300-page PDF, add a cut between pages 7 and 8 to get one file with pages 1–7 and another with pages 8–300.

  4. Run the split

In Pick pages mode, click "Extract selected pages"; in Split mode, click "Split PDF". The job runs locally in your browser and usually finishes in a few seconds, depending on page count and file size.

  5. Download the output

As soon as processing finishes, download links appear for your split file(s). A single output downloads directly; when there are several, each file has its own download link.

When you'll reach for it

  • Breaking a hundred-page user manual into smaller, topic-specific PDFs.

  • Sending only the relevant clauses of a contract to the other party.

  • Separating a bulk scan back into one PDF per original document.

  • Pulling out a single page from a bank statement that's all you actually need.

  • Sharing only the section you presented from a slide deck with the audience.

Tips and best practices

  • Count pages in the PDF's actual order — the cover is page 1.

  • Use Pick pages mode to pull specific pages into one PDF.

  • Use Split mode to divide the file at your split points into separate PDFs.

  • Splitting a 40-page PDF at page 21 gives you two files: pages 1–21 and pages 22–40.

  • On large PDFs, confirm the split page in preview first — it helps avoid cutting at the wrong spot.

  • If a password-protected PDF gives you trouble, unlock it and save an unprotected copy first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extract specific pages?
Yes. In Pick pages mode, select any pages you need from the PDF. Your selection is compiled into a single new PDF file.
Can I split a PDF into multiple files?
Yes. In Split mode, divide the PDF at the split points you choose. For example, if you split a 500-page PDF at page 15 and then again at page 200, you get three separate PDFs: pages 1–15, pages 16–200, and pages 201–500.
What is the difference between Pick pages and Split mode?
Pick pages mode extracts only the pages you select into one PDF. Split mode cuts the document at your chosen points and produces multiple separate PDF files.
Can I extract a single page?
Yes. In Pick pages mode, select just the one page you want. That page is delivered as a new PDF.
Is quality lost when pages are split or extracted?
No. Pages are not converted to images or recompressed; selected pages are transferred into new PDFs. Text, vector graphics and overall page quality are preserved.
Can I combine several pages into one PDF?
Yes. In Pick pages mode, select multiple pages. All selected pages are merged in order into a single PDF file.
Can I split password-protected PDFs?
Encrypted or password-protected PDFs may not work. If that happens, open the file and save an unprotected copy first, then try again in HexxPDF.
Is there a limit with very large PDFs?
We do not set an artificial cap — your browser's memory is the practical limit. For PDFs with very high page counts or large file sizes, desktop browsers tend to be more stable than mobile browsers.
Does splitting change my original file?
No. Your uploaded PDF is never modified. The tool creates separate new PDF files; your original stays exactly as it was.
